Bombe chests are a pretty fascinating piece of furniture. For you furniture history buffs out there, they were created during the Regency period in France, the early 1700s as it were. They were meant to be inspired by the far off Orient and a classic version featured a curved front with very ornate features, such as carvings on the drawers or on the sides.
Today, you can still get a traditional looking chest, including one of our favorites, one with bombe chest drawers that increase storage in your home. These beauties shouldn’t be confused, by the way, with Bombay chests. It’s bombe as in a style of chest, not Bombay, as its point of manufacturer and origin.

Historically, painted bombe chests were all the rage back in the day. Early versions had extravagantly painted fronts of dragons, flowers and nautical influences as well as traditional Oriental motifs. This, of course, led to the black bombe chest, which took its deep ebony color from classic Japanese and Chinese furnishings.
